Continental quarterback Jordan Eck ’13 is a force to be reckoned with on this season’s new-and-improved football team. He started his season by throwing two touchdown passes and running into the end zone for another to seal Hamilton’s triumph over Tufts. The win marked Hamilton’s first victory in a season opener in 19 years, as well as the end of a nine-game losing streak against Tufts.
And that was just his first game.
Eck has been preparing to reenergize the football team for years. Though he started playing in the 7th grade, Eck states that he grew up with the sport all his life. “My dad played in college,” Eck explained, “so I was raised in somewhat of a football atmosphere.” Fortunately, Eck found that he could continue to pursue his passion at Hamilton. “Once I was recruited by Hamilton, I could not pass up such a great opportunity,” citing both the football team (of which he is now a captain) and the “well-respected college” that is Hamilton. Eck made it clear that his passion certainly hasn’t faltered: “Most of my life revolves around football.”
Indeed, Hamilton’s star quarterback has time for little else between “being consumed by Hamilton’s rigorous academic schedule” and tireless practices with the football team. That isn’t to say, however, that Eck’s passion for football is keeping him from pursuing other opportunities. In fact, just the opposite; this past summer, he found an internship with My Sports Dreams, a small sports marketing company. “It was a great learning experience,” Eck said, “and definitely something I am considering for the future.” Now that he’s back on the Hill, however, Eck is ready and willing to crush some NESCAC competition.
Looking at the team’s 2-2 record so far, Eck is all ambition and confidence: “We are focused on finishing 6-2.” Eck, who is now in his third season playing for the Continentals, knows a winning team when he sees one. “I think in order to have success, you’ve got to have a lot of togetherness on the team,” he explained. “You want each player working as hard as he can for his teammates, and I believe that’s what we have this year.” The team’s closeness is especially astounding given the nearly 30 new players on the team. Yet when asked if he thought they were pulling their weight on the team, Eck’s answer was simple: “Yes, for sure.” Eck couldn’t say enough good things about his fellow teammates. “I love this team,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun to go out every day and play football with your best friends. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
If Eck can couple this camaraderie with his interminable passion for the sport, maybe that goal of 6-2 won’t be so far off after all.
