Men’s soccer fights for first conference win

Lifted from the goals by captain Frank Campagnano ’12 and Griffin Abbot ’15, the Continentals recorded their first NESCAC victory of the season over Bates on Oct. 1. The 2-1 win, marking the halfway point in the season, vaulted Hamilton into 8th place in the NESCAC standings—a coveted position because it is the top eight teams that make the conference playoffs. Field hockey breaks even

It’s remarkable how quickly momentum can shift in the span of a mere 24 hours. Sparked by a second minute goal from Mary Lancaster ’12, the Hamilton field hockey team pulled off an impressive upset over NESCAC foe Amherst College in front of a huge crowd of family and friends this past Bicentennial weekend. Only twenty four hours later, however, Hamilton looked lackluster in a 2-0 loss to Wesleyan. More ...

Offbeat Athletes: The Climbing Wall

Anyone who has ventured into the inner bowels of the Blood Alumni Gym is bound to notice the mysterious navy carabiner silhouettes that decorate the grey-white linoleum floor. Follow the trail of carabiners through the hall, around a corner, down some stairs and ta-da! There stands the Hamilton Climbing Wall, a three-story artificial rock face dotted with colorful hand holds and tape markings. More ...

Men’s soccer continues struggles in NESCAC play

In a scheduling maneuver that took advantage of Hamilton’s Bicentennial Weekend, the Continentals confronted the ambitious task of facing two leading teams in the NESCAC, Amherst and Wesleyan, on consecutive days. To the disappointment of over 800 spectators at Love Field across both games, the Continentals were unable to secure their first conference win of the season, falling 0-1 and 0-2, respectively. Football wins first home opener in 19 years at Bicentennial Celebration

The Continentals’ 24-16 win over Tufts on Sept. 24 was a long time coming. The victory was Hamilton’s first season-opening win since it trounced Amherst 41-0 in 1992. The atmosphere at Steuben Field on Saturday was electric, with 3,277 in attendance. More ...

Football, a simple game for Coach Steve Stetson

Steve Stetson stresses simplicity. Every head football coach spends hours watching film and creating complex schemes to win games. But for the ninth-year Hamilton head coach, the Continentals’ success boils down to three factors. “If we concentrate on maintaining [possession of] the football, playing sound, solid defense and scoring touchdowns, we can win,” said Stetson, who has coached the Continentals for the last six years and for three years from 1982 to 1984. Turnovers were the Continentals’ Achilles’ heel in 2010.  More ...

Hamilton sports history on College Hill: A look back

Hamilton sports history is filled with great names and great games, and as a part of the bicentennial celebration, I would like to reflect on a few that certainly stand out and have stood the test of time. Although Hamilton football has had a few tough years as of late, the program’s history is rich in great games and great moments, dating all the way back to the 19th century. Hamilton football originated in the 1890s, shortly after the pioneering schools like Harvard and Yale began full-fledged programs in the 1870s.  More ...

Offbeat Athletes: Ultimate Frisbee

No ref, no ball, no problem. Since 1981, Hamilton students have come together to play Ultimate Frisbee, a noncontact sport where self-officiating players attempt to score points by passing a disc into an end zone similar to a football or rugby end zone. Christened “Hot Saucers” in 2005, the Hamilton Ultimate team, a club sport, has grown into a powerhouse of solid play. Last spring the men’s team won the sectional tournament and then put up an impressive fight at the regional tournament. The smaller women’s team continues to grow and improve as a flood of new underclassmen talent learns the game this fall. More ...
