Students get involved off-campus

On Saturday, September 13, more than 150 Hamilton students took part in Make a Difference Day, sponsored by Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity (HAVOC), an event which served a total of 23 sites in the area. Service projects included clearing weeds and branches at Heritage Farm, sorting books at the Utica Public Library, cleaning cages, doing laundry and playing with cats at Spring Farm Cares animal shelter and spending time with nursing home residents at the Masonic Care Community. On Thursday, September 11, students, faculty and staff crowded into the Red Pit to hear Professor of Classics and Africana Studies Shelley Haley speak about the history of diversity and inclusion at Hamilton College. Roper discusses modern feminism

On Friday, September 12, the Womyn’s Center brought Danielle Roper ’06 to the Hill to speak about her personal experience with feminism. Roper— sharp, funny and fiercely passionate— spoke with students about intersectionality, misconceptions of the modern feminist movement, and her personal connection to third world feminism. College recommends changes to Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Policy

Last week, the Title IX Task Force, formed by President Joan Hinde Stewart in May, released its recommended changes to Hamilton’s Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Policy. Off the Hill Challenge connects students with locals

On Saturday, September 6, Hamilton students braved wind and scattered showers to embark on the Off the Hill Challenge. Participants went from storefront to storefront, collecting complimentary flowers from the Clinton Florist, sharp cheddar cheese from Tom’s Natural Foods and perfectly proportioned half-moon cookies at Village Crossing. For many first-years, the event was not only their first chance to explore downtown Clinton; it was their first time off the Hill at all since arriving on campus. More ...

Dovidio lectures on psychology of prejudice

On Tuesday, September 9, faculty and students alike piled into the Bradford Auditorium of the Kirner-Johnson building to listen to John F. Dovidio speak. Dovidio, the Carl Iver Hovland Professor of Psychology at Yale University, does research centered around issues of social power and social relations. His lecture, entitled “The Subtlety of Contemporary Racism: Implications for Intergroup Perceptions, Interaction, and Policy,” was the John Rybash Memorial Psychology Lecture for this year. More ...
