I have always believed that individuals owe it to both themselves and the people around them to take responsibility for the world we live in. I am an adamant advocate for incorporating sustainable and environmentally friendly actions into our daily lives. I myself make an effort to turn off lights in my dorm when I leave. I use my Hamilton Nalgene instead of plastic water bottles. I wash my clothes in cold water. More ...
This Friday, two Hamilton students and two alumni returned from an 18-day cruise to Antarctica with Principal Investigator Eugene Domack, the J.W. Johnson Family Professorship of Environmental Studies. Deanna Nappi ’15, Katy Smith ’13, Garrett Akie ’12 and University of South Florida Ph.D palaeoceanographer, Professor Amelia Shevenell ’96 boarded the LM Gould on Oct. 10th with several initiatives in mind. They have worked in the Hamilton sedimentary geology lab before, but they jumped on the opportunity to gain real-life experience and a familiarity with the sample collection process. More ...
Ethan Kelly '14 While in recent years I have discovered a new love of politics, the extent of my knowledge did not reach far beyond what I learned on “The Daily Show” four nights a week. Galia Slayen '13 After spending the year abroad in Beijing and Washington D.C., I’ve had the opportunity to spend my fall semester working for Christie Vilsack, Kirkland ’72, in Iowa. More ...
For the past month or so, the staff at our Hamilton College Mail Center has doubled as ballot distributors and collectors, as Hamilton students dutifully cast their votes in the 2012 election. According to Mail Center employee Alyssa Hopper ’13, “It is nice to see so many people making an effort to vote.” More ...
With Family Weekend approaching we can expect a bustling campus and an unfortunate crowding in all food-centered locations. Dining halls and Opus lines are sure to be stacked with excited parents hoping for a taste, literally, of their kids’ college life. If you are inclined and able to take advantage of your, or a friend’s, parents’ eagerness to explore the surrounding area and treat you to some sit down dining, I recommend Ancora. When the proximity of Nola’s makes it an easy option and thus popular to the point of no empty tables, take an extra 15 minutes to drive to Utica for a taste of Ancora; I’m sure your guests will appreciate the extra alone time. For many seniors, “What should I do now?” has been a common question. If anything, they may feel a bit like becoming first years in college, except this time, they are first years in the real world. More ...
Most catch-up conversations for abroad students begin the same way: Tell me anything, tell me everything! I left the U.S. in early September and am, by now, well acquainted with the drill. Relatives, friends, Spectator editors, they all ask, “How is Edinburgh?” and leave it at that. They don’t specify a subject and wait for whatever you want to tell, hoping that living in a foreign city is as intriguing as it sounds. More ...
With fall semester nearly halfway over, HEAG is making it our mission to “take back the tap” at Hamilton. Our goal is to encourage people to drink less bottled water and eventually eliminate bottled water from Hamilton’s campus altogether. Bottled water is actually not safer or cleaner than tap water: it is often bottled from tap water, it generates garbage, it is thousands of times more expensive than tap water and the bottled water industry is ruining the environment. In blind taste tests, people often cannot tell the difference between bottled and tap water, and they usually prefer tap water. We found that this was true at Hamilton last spring. More ...
