Let’s keep talking

Is the Millennial Generation unusually apathetic to social issues? Many would say “yes,” and sometimes, as editors, we feel unfortunately inclined to agree. Week after week at The Spectator, we receive a limited number of letters to the editor and notice an alarmingly low level of student interest in writing Opinion articles in response to events and phenomena that occur both on and off the Hill. As we continuously struggle to garner content from the student body, we cannot help but wonder to what extent people actually care about important topics that should be discussed and addressed. In light of Monday’s events

After two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three and wounding at least 144, our country was put at a loss for words. The worst terror attack in the U.S. since September 11, 2001, this tragedy feels impossible for anyone—from those personally affected to those professionally responding—to explain. More ...

Why can’t we be friends?

On Thursday, April 4, The Colgate Maroon-News published an article titled, “Hamilton College Seeks Relationship with Colgate SGA,” in which writer Amanda Golden ’15 stated her student body’s disinterest in collaborating with Hamilton’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) to promote entertainment events at both schools. Increased costs = Increased benefits

Every year, Hamilton College increases its comprehensive costs by about four percent in order to insure the high caliber of student experience that the College promises in its mission statement. Hamilton seeks “to provide an educational experience that emphasizes academic excellence and the development of students as human beings,” a goal that the funds which students’ families pay for tuition, room, board and student activities help the College achieve. Sacerdote Great Names 2013 panel: A unique opportunity

Hamilton students have a tendency to be skeptical before being open minded.  While this attitude can be beneficial in academic pursuits, it often leads to missed opportunities when it comes to extracurriculars.  This week, The Spectator named two speakers for the 2013 Sacerdote Great Names series.  Though these names might not be as immediately recognizable as past speakers like Bill Clinton or Aretha Franklin, their experiences and contributions to the international peace process will make them excellent choices. Commencement 2013: A flaw in the formula

While the announcement of Thomas Tull ’92 as the 2013 commencement speaker is exciting for the entire community, the lack of student input in the decision is troubling. While the Hamilton community of alumni certainly offers a wide range of successful and interesting men and women to serve as commencement speakers, opening the decision up to the student body would ensure that the speaker reflects the aspirations of the graduating class. The Hamilton experience: A valuable commodity

Hamilton was recently ranked the eighth most valuable private college in the country by The Princeton Review and USA Today.  Outranking nearly all NESCAC schools, Hamilton moved up two spots in 2013 from its previous ranking of tenth in 2012.  Princeton Review evaluated 650 public and private institutions based on academics, financial aid and the “real cost” of attending the college. Sticky fingers in the suites

Living in our Central New York bubble, we often forget that we are not immune to the woes of the outside world. However, any Hamiltonian who has had the pleasure of gracing the long, winding halls of Milbank and Babbitt residence halls on the dark side knows of their devastating plague: “suite-shopping.” More ...

A fall semester review

We at The Spectator have faced a newsworthy semester this fall on the Hill.  Hamilton College’s 201st year thus far is one of incredible victories for the College as well as some unfortunate tragedies.  As the calendar year winds down and The Spectator prints its final issue of the semester, we thought it would be useful to look back at this eventful season. 315-859-4000 Save this number. Save a life.

Save that number in your phone right now.  Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We need to remind ourselves as a community that the EMTs are always an option without consequences. This is important to remember especially in light of the fact that this semester has seen some of the most terrifying student conduct in recent memory. More ...
