The 2014 Class & Charter Day Concert is finally here. After a huge success last spring with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Campus Activities Board (CAB) is bringing the renowned indie pop band of Capital Cities.
Capital Cities is a Los Angeles-based product of the dynamic duo, Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian.
Many of you may know the band’s hit single, “Safe and Sound,” has been played on radio stations around the world since its release in 2011. The song initially gained attention when it was featured in an advertisement for Diabetes Hands Foundation’s Big Blue test program.
In fact, between 2012-2013, “Safe and Sound” peaked the charts in the United States, Germany, Mexico and Venezuela among others.
Unlike many successful pop bands currently in the charts, Capital Cities is not just a one-hit-wonder. The duo’s debut album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery,” is full of fun, dance-themed songs that will have Hamilton students bouncing around throughout the night. Songs like “Kangaroo Court” combine synthesizers and trumpets to give Capital Cities a unique, almost disco-esque sound.
If you prefer swaying to dancing, you will still have your moments. The final track on the album, “Beginnings,” will leave the audience in a dreamy state as the sun sets over Turf Field.
In a recent Spectator article about the Spring Concert featuring JoJo and Twista, a writer pleaded for more live music. Well,
Capital Cities have been traveling across the United States this spring with a live band.
The members of the live band are Manuel Quintero (bass), Nick Merwin (guitar), Spencer Ludwig (trumpet) and Channing Cook Holmes (drums). Not only does Ludwig often take interesting trumpet solos, but live performances, including that at Coachella 2014, show impressive coordination on stage.
The fact that the stage will be full of energetic musicians will make this C&C Day Concert one of the best Hamilton has ever seen.
Electro-pop group Scavenger Hunt will be supporting Capital Cities as the opening act. Like Capital Cities, the band is a duo made up of Dam Mufson and Jill Lamoureux. The two met each other in Los Angeles when Mufson happened to hear Lamoureux’s enchanting voice. According to their website, the two composed a track the very next day for a commercial.
“Dreamers” is their song to look out for—Lamoureux’s voice really is enchanting on this track. Scavenger Hunt is upbeat but not tiring. This is the exact kind of band needed to open for Capital Cities. The lively mood will be set, but students will not be exhausted.
Hamilton’s very own Sarge Kinlin ’15 will open the night at 4:30 p.m. with a DJ set.
Be sure not to miss this concert. Twenty years from now, you probably won’t be playing Capital Cities for your kids. However, tomorrow is a celebration of another passing year at Hamilton College. Dance the night away, before you’re swamped with finals.
