Last week, Hamilton’s Delta Chi fraternity organized a fundraiser for cancer research. To raise money, representatives of Delta Chi sold raffle tickets in Beineke Student Activities Village throughout the week, and planned to celebrate their successes on Saturday afternoon at a barbecue event.
The event, called DX BBQ, was meant to take place on the Dunham quad and feature activities like volleyball, football and an outdoor barbecue lunch. However, Delta Chi’s plans were turned upside down when the skies over Clinton unleashed a torrential downpour across Hamilton’s campus, forcing DX BBQ to relocate to the inside of Soper Commons dining hall.
Despite the weather-related adversity, the brothers of Delta Chi consider the fundraiser a success; DX BBQ raised $500. Along with the money that the fraternity raised last fall at its charity basketball tournament, Delta Chi has raised $2000 this year to fund cancer research initiatives.
The rain failed to dampen Hamilton students’ spirits, explained Delta Chi member Simon Judd ’13. “The rain was a...disappointment, but we still had fun hanging out and playing music in Commons.”
The money raised by Delta Chi will be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. “We chose the Jimmy V Foundation because of its tremendous history of donating money to cancer research,” Judd said.
According to the organization’s website, the Jimmy V Foundation has raised over $100 million for cancer research nationwide and has awarded cancer research grants in 38 different states.
