Blow Me Down Creek

Blow Me Down creek was our first introduction to the serpentine in this area. Along our hike to the creek we saw orangish rocks with crisscrossing fractures. The serpentine weathers to this color because it is high in iron and magnesium. We hiked to the creek because we could get a better look at a fresh surface of the serpentine. The serpentine was originally olivine but was altered as it was brought up to the Earth's surface. The serpentine now is a dark green- sometimes grayish color on a fresh surface and is waxy and smooth.

Vegetation
Serpentine does not supply the necessary nutrients for vegetaion to really flourish in this area. Also the rocks are primarly iron and magnesium, because that is what the mantle of the Earth primarly is, and these are actually poisonious to most plants. This creates sparse vegetation (see Tablelands) and allows other plants that do not rely on the soil for nutrients to succeed.
