One of the largest student organizations, Hamilton
Action Volunteer Outreach Coalition encourages students to get off
their couches, get off the Hill, and get into the community centers,
schools, and lives of those who would benefit from their commitment
and care. At the same time, the students gain just as much as they
give from the experience, sometimes more! Participation in HAVOC is
a chance to put classroom learning, desire for social change, and
caring together through action.
More than 400 of Hamilton's 1,700 students volunteer with HAVOC each
year in some capacity. Some busy students may take just a few hours
one Saturday to build with Habitat for Humanity or clean and paint
at a soup kitchen. Others are "varsity volunteers," who
spend hours each week caring for the terminally ill, or tutoring children
at risk. There are three main branches to HAVOC, which are organized
and led by an energetic, committed executive board.
The first is weekly projects. HAVOC sponsors 20 weekly
projects, where groups of students go out into the community for a
few hours one day a week. The second is monthly opportunities, where
students can participate one day a month in organized volunteer programs.
And third, HAVOC is especially proud of its larger-than-other schools-our-size,
crazy, wacky and intense Alternative Spring Break program.
