46 Peak Weekend 1999 Canceled
*Due to the hurricane weather that we experienced last year, the High Peak Region of the Adirondacks suffered massive landslides. There were lots of trees down making the trails impassable and very dangerous in some areas. The ADK urged hikers to stay out of the area and cautioned strongly against anyone spending the night in the High Peaks because of the possibility of more landslides.
* With this in consideration the Outing Club officers decided that it would be unsafe to send such a large number of students into the area. 46 Peak Weekend 1999 was therefore canceled indefinitely. We debated rescheduling, but a soggy fall and melting snow made the High Peak region very susceptible to damage from hikers. Come the spring the ADK was still asking hikers not to summit any of the High Peaks because of the damage that could be caused. With this in mind HOC decided to forgo one of its biggest traditions and not hold 46 Peak weekend in the '99-'00 school year. This was the first time the event was not held since its inception.
*However the ADK did have crews going into the High Peaks during the fall to try to help out mother nature and get the trails back in order. HOC sponsored a group of students who went up to the Adirondacks for a weekend to help the trail crews. Not only did these students earn the respect of the ADK crews with whom they worked, they also got really neat t-shirts for helping out.
