The women’s basketball team suffered two hard losses at home this week against Tufts and Bates.
The Continentals got off to a rough start against Tufts and found themselves already down by ten with 10:39 to go in the first half. The team sitting in second in the NESCAC standings did not let up and stretched their lead to 29-16 at halftime. The Jumbos continued to play hard in the second half, stretching the lead to 50-27 with 5:24 left. Despite a late 10-2 surge, including two well-driven layups by Eliza Howe ’13 and a three-pointer from Dani Feigin ’14, it was too little too late from Hamilton; Tufts won 52-37. Kim Goidell ’13 led the Continentals in scoring with 13 and also grabbed eight boards. Howe was also in double figures with 11. Olivia Pimm ’14 continued her dominance on the boards with five.
Women’s basketball’s final game of the season against Bates was more competitive. The first half was very back and forth, and neither team held a lead of more than five points. The Continentals went into the locker room with a slim 24-22 lead. The same story continued at the start of the second half, but Bates started to pull away with 14:47 left. The Bobcats opened up a 12-point lead on the strength of a 19-2 run. Hamilton would cut that lead to two with a 10-0 run. However, they could not get all of it back from Bates, losing the game 53-45. Howe led the scoring with 14, Goidell had 12 and Feigin had eight.
Despite five losses to end the season, the team was successful in its first NESCAC campaign. They adjusted to a first-year coach and the loss of key player Madie Harlem and improved as the season went along, which bodes well for next season.
With all twelve players returning next year, things are looking up for the Hamilton women’s basketball team.
