A layout on the ultimate frisbee field is a little more exciting than a layout in the newsroom. The Hamilton College ultimate frisbee team laid out all weekend as tournament host to ten teams from all over New York state.
“I’m gonna have to give [the nicest layout] to sophomore Dan Witte,” said Ben Schwartz ’12, one of the team’s captains, “not just for one, but because he was a layout machine throughout the whole tournament.”
The team won three out of the four games they played, losing only to the Hamilton alumni team, which calls themselves the “H2BJs.”
“Playing our alumni was a lot of fun,” said Schwartz, “although many of them now play ultimate above the college level on club teams, so they posed a formidable threat.”
Despite the lone loss, the team made up for it in their other games. They beat both the A and B squads from SUNY Brockport and the Union College team. Schwartz was especially proud of his team’s performance against SUNY Brockport A, who traditionally bring a great team.
“We maintained patience and worked it up the field sometimes with as many as 30 or 40 throws before scoring,” commented Schwartz.
Unfortunately, Schwartz and co-captain David Hibbard ’12 will graduate with four other seniors this May. Nonetheless, Schwartz feels he is leaving the team in good hands:
“Our freshman and sophomore classes display great skill and poise on the field already,” he said. “I have no doubt they will pose a threat to our region next year.”
The team will travel to the University of Rochester on Friday and will compete in sectionals the following weekend.
