Housing lottery leaves campus divided

With the housing lottery coming up quicker than many would like to admit, I believe that now is the perfect time to consider whether or not our fine Hamilton tradition is really the best way to assign housing for the upcoming year. More ...

Lecture highlights hidden diversity problem

Hamilton has a diversity problem, and it’s not the one you’re thinking of. Walk up to any poster display space in Sadove, KJ, Beinecke, or the Science Center. Look for events sponsored officially by the College (the President’s office, the Dean of Students, the Dean of Faculty, the Days-Massolo Center, etc.). Do you notice any similarities? More ...

Anonymity cramps small-campus culture

A dark cloud has fallen over our Hill—the cloud of anonymity.  Recent advances in our digital technology now allow Hamilton students to anonymously post secrets, compliments and even personal attacks. Each of these anonymous digital forums, which our community so readily uses and “likes,” threatens the sanctity of individuality and interpersonal communication in a way that seems counterproductive for what should be a small, tight-knit group of driven undergrads. A call to arms for adamant individuals

There is nothing more discouraging for an editor of our Opinion page to hear than “What should I write about?” All I can respond with is “Well… your opinion.” I often get a lackluster, noncommittal response such as “I don’t really have any opinions.” What? Seriously? You are a young, aware college student at an extremely volatile time in your life living at an even more volatile time in the world’s history. How do you not have an opinion on anything? Upon reflection, I have developed my own three-part hypothesis explaining this baffling phenomenon. Our generation’s lack of voiced opinions is the result of a mixture of apathy, the overwhelming amount of information we have access to and the fear of judgment we face with pretty much everything we do. A writing tip for Hamilton College: there’s room for improvement

Hamilton College prides itself on being a writing school. The College goes as far to claim on its website that it is “a national leader in teaching students to write effectively.” Others seem to agree. Recently, USA TODAY College placed Hamilton College second in its “Best 10 American colleges for writers” list. More ...

Hamilton speaks on: Snapchat and Tinder

I have been off campus for the last year and a half, therefore I’m in many ways out of the loop on both Hamilton and college trends in general. But when I returned to Hamilton this spring, it wasn’t the new Wellin Museum or the awesome transformation of McEwen that shocked me. Rather, it was the use of new, slightly invasive social media tools that are now embedded in daily college life. More ...

Party presents potential problems

Last weekend, the brothers of Theta Delta Chi attempted to put together an event titled “The White Party.” Despite the name, the party did not seem to have any racial overtones as the theme simply required attendees to wear white outfits. However, on the same weekend, a Facebook invite went out for a dorm party called “The Black Party,” which contained a picture of African American rapper Kenneth Moore (“Big Moe”) and advertised the alcoholic drink known as “purple drank.” More ...

The State of the Union: Democratic view

President Obama’s State of the Union address outlined his plans for the next year, and likely for the next four, with clarity and elegance. He suggests a prosperous future not only for the nation, but also for our generation specifically. More ...

The State of the Union: Republican view

Although the remarks and proposals made in Tuesday’s State of the Union Address sounded uplifting and new, President Obama was hiding his incompetence by watering down his potentially destructive plans with clichés. He may have seemed like a revolutionary to some when he remarked on the importance of the future of generations to come.   More ...
