GOP debate: Fiorina wins, women lose

Wednesday, Sept. 16, marked the second presidential debate of the 2016 race. On stage at the Reagan II Library in  California, the eleven leading Republican presidential candidates stood regally in front of Ronald Reagan’s presidential plane. This proved fitting, as a solid chunk of the debate was spent glorifying the 40th President of the United States. More ...

Arrest of Texas student in perspective

You have probably heard the story: an innocent, curious 14-year-old boy brought a homemade clock into a Texas high school to show his teacher. The teacher, fearing that the clock was an explosive, confiscated it and the boy was arrested. The clock ended up being, well, just a clock, and the issue, unlike the clock, blew up. More ...

The Soapbox: Kim Davis’ Incredulous Hypocrisy

Despite what you may have heard, Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis, is not the “Rosa Parks” of religious freedom. Kim Davis’s $80,000 salary is paid by the U.S. government, making her a public servant. So after the Obergefell v. Hodges decision which rendered same-sex marriage legal nationwide, Davis—in her job as a county clerk—was mandated to provide marriage licenses. However, citing her “religious beliefs,” Davis refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses. More ...

Deez Nuts demonstrates systematic issues

The long anticipated presidential season is upon us and has been the talk of the summer. It is like the Olympics, only better. We have seen brainless oafs like Chris Christie and Donald Trump throw their names in the hat because, hey, why not have 17 major Republican candidates battle it out for the seat on the coveted DC throne? More ...

Why conservative support of Trump is so surprising

New York businessman Donald Trump has recently taken the political world by storm. Trump has recently been crowned as the highest polling member of the entire Republican field. He recently polled at 30 percent in Sept. 2’s Monmouth University poll. Non-political Ben Carson polled second with 18 percent, while career politician and the heir to America’s most prominent aristocratic line, Jeb Bush, polled at just eight percent, tying Ted Cruz for third place. If I had asked you a year ago who would be the 2016 GOP frontrunner in September 2015, I doubt anyone would have named Donald Trump. More ...

Rhodessa Jones calls Hamilton students to activism

Amidst the constant influx of news about police brutality and blatant racism in the justice system, many calls have been made for increased activism and reform. Statistically, black women are three times more likely than white women to be imprisoned at some point in their lifetime. Even worse, black women are more than six times more likely to be imprisoned than white men. This is a trend that clearly demonstrates the unfortunate racism evident in the criminal justice system. Campaigns such as Black Lives Matter have proven to be steps in the right direction toward garnering support, but clearly more can be done. Enter Rhodessa Jones. More ...

Letter to the Editor

To The Spectator: I was impressed and pleased to see a HAVOC team volunteering at the Kirkland Town Library on Saturday afternoon.  A half dozen students in matching t-shirts were wiping dust and grime from the DVDs and books-on-tape. As a borrower of these items and a Clinton resident, I am grateful for HAVOC’S contribution to the larger community. Sincerely, Anne Kinnel More ...

Fear of missing out? Pop open Friendsy!

Scrolling through apps such as Instagram and Facebook can often turn into a barrage of parties you never went to and friends you never made. This fear of missing out, or FOMO, is an all-too-real source of anxiety. Despite the fact that this anxiety’s source is often a façade, the visual evidence seems to speak otherwise. While many choose to blame the apps themselves for causing this FOMO, fighting fire with fire seems to be a more appropriate way of combating this social anxiety. More ...

The $10 bill about equality, not Alex

Hamilton students have been known to passionatelyinvolve themselves into issues they find important and enact necessary change. It is no surprise that much of the Hamilton community was up in arms when news broke that our namesake, Alexander Hamilton, was being considered for removal from US currency in favor of a woman. Indeed, I was one such student. More ...

2016 Race to the White House: John Kasich is the GOP’s realistic choice

Hillary Clinton is untrustworthy, Bernie Sanders is too radical, Donald Trump is a lunatic and nobody wants to elect another Bush. Is there any candidate suited to run the country? Many are disheartened with the lack of viable choices for President.  To those who are concerned, upset or downright confused, I understand your pain. To these people I say fear not, for there is a candidate with the qualifications and ability to successfully lead the free world: John Kasich. More ...
