First year experience committee
After a particularly destructive weekend, including the shattering of one of the floor-to-ceiling windows of Café Opus, on Monday, Student Assembly discussed the creation of a campaign against destructive behaviors and excessive drinking in order to show student support. Different ideas were read for a possible slogan campaign, and someone suggested the creation of a student pledge. Something that students could sign to show that they do not support destructive behaviors. It was also proposed to include an addition of a social code to the Honor Code that every student signs when entering his or her first year. While nothing was finalized, it was decided that SA is fully behind this campaign and plans to raise awareness with one, or all, of these forms.
FebFest
The first winter carnival at Hamilton took place in 1938. The early carnivals included performances by Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, but they slowly tapered off in the 50s. In 2000, students brought FebFest back to liven up the normally grey atmosphere. With FebFest approaching, Social Traditions Committee will be selling t-shirts and buttons in Beinecke Feb. 7-11. Students will need buttons to enter many of the events beginning Saturday Feb. 11. The festivities will kick off at 12 p.m. with the CAB Carnival in the Events Barn with inflatables and carnival food. Sunday will begin with a GNAR-B-QUE at 2 p.m. on the Dunham Green and will end with a Grammy Viewing Party in Sadove with an award for the student with the most accurate predictions. Monday’s events include a Beer Tasting at the Little Pub, a Stand-up Comedy Open Mic Night and a skating showcase at 8:30 p.m. by the Hamilton Figure Skating Club followed by Open Skate. The annual Vagina Monologues, a presentation by students, faculty and staff will begin at 7 p.m. at the Fillius Events Barn with proceeds going to the YWCA and Planned Parenthood Utica. Wednesday will include two annual events; the Banff Film Festival, a 2.5 hour showing, will be at 7 p.m. in Kirner-Johnson 125, while Mr. Hamilton will take place at 8:30 p.m. and includes performances by HEAT, the Dance Team and the Finesse Step Team. The week will conclude with ELS’s Rocky Horror Party at the Tolles Pavillion on Sat. 18.
