Discussion of Common Reading
The Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies Brent Rodriguez-Plate led a discussion about the Common Reading for the incoming class. Instead of requiring the class to read one book and then host discussions on the novel, the Common Reading will be centered around the theme “Know Thy Stuff: The Meaning of Objects on our Lives” and will discuss how individuals and society can form their identity around objects. While not confirmed, it is a possibility that the required novel will be Evocative Objects: Things We Think With, a collection of short stories edited by Sherry Turkle. Some students suggested that the College invite some of the authors to come and speak at Hamilton as a continuation of First Year Orientation but that these talks be open to the campus community. Anyone may email splate@hamilton.edu with questions.
Constitution under revision
The Constitution Committee of Student Assembly is reviewing the Constitution in order to make possible amendments or clarifications. On Monday, the general body of Student Assembly reviewed possible changes that they wanted the Committee to clarify. Among possible changes is the addition of a Director of Publicity and a clarification of funding codes.
