Trinity College elects new president

On March 25, Trinity College elected the 22nd president in the history of the College.  Joanne Berger-Sweeney succeeds James F. Jones Jr. who held the position for the last 10 years.  After the College announced controversial new policies regarding Greek life, including a rule that all chapters must have equal male and female membership, Jones and his administration came under heavy scrutiny.  He announced his resignation this past May.

Berger-Sweeney brings previous experience from Tufts University where she served as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.  According to a story on the College’s website, she created the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at Tufts.  She previously served on the Wellesley College faculty as a professor of Biological Sciences and eventually became the Allene Lummis Russell Professor in Neuroscience.

Trinity College Board of Trustees Chairman Paul E. Raether said, “Dr. Berger-Sweeney has devoted her career to the education of students who are smart, eager to work with faculty and ready to engage in many and varied ways across campus life. With this experience, she is a natural fit for Trinity and Trinity for her.”

Berger-Sweeny assumes her office on July 1.
