Comedians Sneed and Parvonian come to campus

By Sade Oyalowo ’14

The room filled with boisterous laughter as the full effect of Josh Sneed’s words set in during one of his stand up routines. Some members remained silent, while others were wiping tears from their eyes. Did he really just make a joke about his bulimic ex-girlfriend?

Expect some inappropriate, but completely humourous, jokes from  Josh Sneed this Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Events Barn during the CAB comedy show. The Cincinatti native is making serious steps towards the goal of becoming one of the top comedians in the business. He has opened for such acts as Dave Chapelle, Dane Cook, Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black and various members of “The Blue Collar Comedy Tour.” Sneed has also made several appearances on “The Bob & Tom Show.”

In 2008, Josh was second out of 100 of Comedy Central’s top comedians in the Annual Stand-up Showdown, awarding him a record deal with Comedy Central Records.  His album, Unacceptable, was released on Sept. 30, 2008, and received glowing reviews. iTunes selected it as one of the Top 10 comedy albums released that year.  Sneed also filmed a 30-minute special, “Comedy Central Presents:  Josh Sneed” that debuted in March 2007, and in November of 2006, Josh placed sixth in the Sierra Mist/MySpace Stand-up or Sit Down Challenge out of over 2,000 entrants.

When Sneed isn’t busy winning comedy competitions, he’s recording his podcast, The Detention Show, with his friend and co-host Mark Chalifoux. Josh describes the podcast as “a show about comedy, pop culture, and your mom.”  He has had many guests on this show including Jimmy Pardo, Doug Benson, and Eddie Gossling.

Joining Sneed on Saturday for the CAB show will be Rob Paravonian, comedian and musician best known for his “Pachelbel Rant” on YouTube, which has over 10 million views. This skit consists of Rob’s distaste for Pachelbel’s Canon in D major, more specifically the cellist’s part that consists of eight-quarter notes played repeatedly.

The success of this video led to Rob becoming the opening act for  George Carlin for several dates on his final “It’s Bad For Ya” tour in 2007-2008. After college, he studied improvisation and ensemble work at the legendary Second City Training Center, while playing gigs and recording with his critically acclaimed band The Steppingstones. Rob became a regular at the Improv as he pursued stand up and began going on the road, playing the Midwest clubs and headlining colleges from coast to coast. Rob has opened for George Carlin and Lily Tomlin and has appeared on Comedy Central and VH1.
