Hamilton College Community Farm

Plant: Asparagus

Planting Needs:

Asparagus takes approximately three years when started from seed to produce viable stalks. When first transplanted be sure to water well because asparagus has a very fragile root system. The HCCF asparagus plot is within the 1812 garden.

Pests and Pest Control:

None to date.

Harvest Techniques:

Harvest early in the spring cut of the stalks just above ground level when they are 9-12” tall. Each root- ball will continue to send up shoots, but at some point it is necessary to let the shoots go so that they will replenish the nutrients in the root-ball. They will grow up to be Christmas tree-like stalks approximately 3’ tall.
